Weekly Predictions: Week 5

Another week has gone by. I'm a little burned-out this week, so the intro will be short this week, and I'm just going to get straight into the games, but Wake did make me look like a genius, and the Auburn v LSU game was very entertaining (even though I picked it wrong). But it is a new week, so let's get down to it.

#3 Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0)
Georgia is coming off a west coast venture where they took care of business and beat Arizona State 27-10. Georgia is led by their star running back Knowshon Moreno (69 carries for455 yards, 9 TDs) and the arm of quarterback Matthew Stafford (62-for-102 , 919 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT). Stafford as also found him a favorite target duo in true freshman AJ Green (16 catches, 300 yards, 2 TDs) and upper junior Mohammed Massaquoi (14 catches, 195 yards, 2 TDs). The offense as a whole is putting up about 36 points/game, with 190 yards on the ground, and about 260 through the air.

The Defense has been stifling so far this year, allowing only 14 points/game and just 50 yards/game on the ground. Leading the defense is linebackers Rennie Curran (29 tackles, 3 sacks) and Darryl Gamble (15 tackles, 1 sack) and safety Reshad Jones (14 tackles, 1 INT).

#8 Crimson Tide (4-0, 1-0)
Alabama is coming off a big Western division win over Arkansas, to the drumming of 49-14. The running game is the key for Alabama (240 yards/game), and backs Glenn Coffee (47 carries, 404 yards, 2 TDs) and Mark Ingram (43 carries, 263 yards, 4 TDs) supply the muscle behind an offensive line that averages . Backs Terry Grant and Ray Upchurch combine for 48 carries, 249 yards, and 2 TDs as backups! Quarterback John Parker Wilson has been consistent this year completing almost 60% of his passes (56-for-94, 542 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT) and senior tight end Nick Walker (12 catches, 102 yards, 2 TDs) and freshman receiver Julio Jones (11 catches, 132 yards, 3 TDs) provide the targets.

On Defense the Tide are allowing about 9 points/game on 55 rushing yards and 180 passing. They are led by defensive backs Rashad Johnson (24 tackles), Javier Arenas (16 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT) and Justin Woodall (13 tackles, 2 INTs), as well as the 6'5 365 lbs Terrence Cody (12 tackles) at defensive tackle.

Breakdown
Both teams live on the power running, and tough defense. Coaching is going to be top notch on both sides. The question will be, the passing game. Did I mention that Georgia is blacking out the stadium, and donning the black jerseys they haven't lost in (just 2 games).

Interesting match-up for the day: Julio Jones versus AJ Green. The top two wideouts in the previous recruiting class, and we will get to see who the best is now.

Prediction
So much rides on this match-up: Top 10 status being the major key. Although this game doesn't carry any divisional repercussions, it does make a statement and a possible preview of the SEC title game.

I predict that the game will come down to one or two big pass plays. Both love to set up the play-action pass, and the key will be which one's busts the opposing defense.

This close game could very well come down to a big play that either scores a touchdown, or sets up a field goal in the waning seconds.

This could be another classic Georgia-Alabama ball game.

Georgia 24
Alabama 30
* The real question is, which fan base annoys you the most?

#20 Tigers (3-1, 1-0)
Clemson is coming off 3 straight wins, be it over inferior talent. Quarterback Cullen Harper, wide receiver Aaron Kelly, and running backs CJ Spiller and James Davis head the offense, whose numbers won't be printed since they are inflated due to playing inferior talent.

The defense, who is led by safety Michael Hamlin, defensive end Ricky Sapp, and linebacker Kavell Connor will also have their stats nameless since they too, have played inferior talent.

Terrapins (3-1, 0-0)
Maryland has been the early Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. After the first two weeks where they squeak by Delaware and lose to Mid. Tenn. State, they dominate Cal and lowly Eastern Michigan. The offense is putting up about 28 points/game on 112 rushing yards, and 187 passing yards. Quarterback Chris Turner (44-for-73, 586 yards, 5 TDs) seems to be the man at the wheel, while runningback Da'Rel Scott (56 carries, 407 yards, 3 TDs) carries it for the Fightin' Turtles. Darrius Heyward-Bey (12 catches, 250 yards, 3 TDs), Danny Oquendo (7 catches, 82 yards), and Ben Gronkowski (8 catches, 55 yards, 2 TDs) are the main pass threats.

The porous defense is giving up 21 points/game, as they give up 112 rushing yards, and an abysmal 279 yards through the air. The D is so bad only defensive back Kevin Barnes deserves any notoriety with his 15 tackles and 2 INTs.

Breakdown
Both teams have shown they can put up numbers, the question is which team shows up. The last time Clemson was ranked, they got spanked by Alabama. This could be a show me game for Clemson. A loss here hurts Clemson's chances of competing for the ACC, as does a loss for Maryland.
Big games haven't been Clemson's strong point under Tommy Bowden, while Maryland has won its biggest test of the year being Cal.

Prediction
The biggest question for the Tigers is which team will show up. The games they have won have been against very inferior competition (Sorry but SC State, Citadel, and NC State aren't what you call the toughest teams around).

Maryland is in the same boat with which team shows up. Maryland came in and dominated their last two games, but will that team show up?

This has a potential to be a decent game, but lean on the side of only one team showing up this Saturday. The game is in Death Valley, and the Tigers are usually awake when they are at home, plus it isn't the easiest place to play in. The Clemson passing game should be too much for Maryland in the end.

Clemson 35
Maryland 17
