Pre-season ACC football 2010

With Phil Steele's pre-season All Conference selections coming out, we here at the Report believe it is time we unveiled our pre-season teams, as well as how we think the league will pan out.

Today, the ACC is on display.

First, look at the divisional races.

Atlantic
Looking at the Atlantic division that saw Clemson win its first divisional title, and make its first appearance in the title game, the Tigers are hoping for a repeat.

Much of that hinges on the return of QB Kyle Parker, who will have to decide between the baseball or football depending on where he is selected in the MLB draft. If Parker comes back, Clemson will have a good shot, if he doesn't, it could be a rougher year.

Personally, I think Parker is like a baseball after being struck by an aluminum bat...gone.

QB Tajh Boyd is more talented, but Clemson will be a year away from returning to the ACC title game, but they will finish no lower than third this year.

Personally, I think Florida State will win the division this year under new coach Jimbo Fisher. He has full control, and is starting to get the athletes FSU has been lacking the past few years.

Don't sleep on the Eagles of Boston College, but they are unproven at QB, but should have a solid offensive line and running back play from Montel Harris.

Projected finish
1-Florida State
2-Clemson
3-Boston College
4-NC State
5-Wake Forest
6-Maryland

Coastal
This will be an interesting division to watch. Four of the six teams can lay a legitimate claim to winning this division.

North Carolina is the odds on favorite, and they are going to be lead by what could be the ACC's best defense, especially the front seven. Offensive consistency will be the key, and can QB T.J. Yates raise his game to a championship caliber level. And, can Greg Little be the superstar he was brought in to be?

Georgia Tech, the returning ACC champion, is in the thick of it, minus RB Jonathan Dwyer. They are also installing the 3-4 defense, but don't quite have the personnel to run it...yet. Their ball-control offense will go a long way, but I'm not sure if it will be enough to carry the team to the title game again.

Miami also can lay claim to the divisional crown. The Hurricanes started off hot last year, but I believe youth played a factor, and Miami struggled the second half of the season. They look to again have a high-powered offense armed with QB Jacory Harris, but defense will be the question.

Finally, Virginia Tech. The Hokies were a game away from the division last year, and will be right in it again this year. They will have two top caliber RBs in Ryan Williams and Darren Evans. They lost a good bit on defense, so it will depend on DC Bud Foster if this team will be in the title game.

Duke and Virginia, enough said.

Projected finish
1-North Carolina
2-Georgia Tech
3-Miami
4-Virginia Tech
5-Virginia
6-Duke

So, it looks like North Carolina and Florida State will meet for the title. If I had to bet the house right now, I'd put my money on North Carolina.

Defense wins championships, and they will have a better defense than Florida State.
