It is time for Clemson to leave the ACC

News is leaking out that the ACC may be facing looming changes.

You can't blame the front office to change after last weeks drubbing at the hands of rival conference, the Southeastern Conference.

Last week, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest all were soundly beaten by South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Vanderbilt, respectively.

But the rumors are unsettling for fans of the Tigers and Seminoles.

With Maryland leaving for the Big 10, a new team had to be added.

But now it is rumored (and likely) that Virginia may also leave for the Big 10.

So, who is the league in talks with? Louisville, Connecticut and....Navy? Yes, the Midshipmen.

No disrespect to the academy, but if the ACC goes after Navy, then the league needs to fold and quit.

Navy is not an athletic first school. They are in the business of academics and preparing its students for the service. Athletics is not even secondary there.

Now, I highly doubt Navy is invited, and to be honest, Louisville would be a great addition: The Cardinals bring a growing football program under Charlie Strong and a strong basketball team.

But just the fact Navy is being considered shows that the league is in a spiral and has given up on football, and athletics period.

And if you ask me, this is the sign Florida State needs to leave. If FSU wants to get taken seriously again and get back to the glory days last seen under Bobby Bowden, they have to get to a conference that is actually competitive.

The SEC will not take FSU, because of the slight the 'Noles gave the conference in 1992 (a slight that allowed South Carolina to join the league) so the only other conference is the Big 12.

The athletic department at Florida State needs to get on the phone with Clemson, Miami and Virginia Tech, and present itself as a package deal to the Big 12 to make an eastern division with West Virginia.

And for Clemson, they are already resemble a Big 12 school: Big offense and a porous defense.

While the move might not improve the football in the Big 12, it would open more TV markets to the conference, and would move the Big 12 into SEC country.
